The Right Christians Take On The Christian Right
Christian Right: Republican Tool
Andrew Sarchus, a United Methodist like George Bush, decries the role being played by the Christian Right in American politics in a fine article on the Democratic Underground. Sarchus contends that the Christian Right is little more than "electoral cannon fodder" distracted by Republican pretenses to care about "their" issues so that they vote against their self-interest and the welfare of their children, the environment and the "least of these" in our society
It sparks some debate in the comments. For example: I would have to take issue with Sarchus' assertion that the economic damgage done by the Bush administration is obvious to "everyone." The Christian right in particular does NOT concede this obvious truth, blaming either some imaginary delayed effect of the Clinton presidency, or the aftermath of September 11. I've had far too many of these discussions to be mistaken about this. In addition, it should be remembered that these are people who actively pray for the Rapture, and welcome the so-called "End Times." They believe they are only here for the short term, and in any event, see world and national chaos, economic and political, as a necessary means to an apocalyptic end. As a result, they can justify an economic downturn as just the fulfillment of "prophecy."
