UK Financial Times -- Clare Short's resignation triggered a serious row last night over the legality of the government's post-war approach to Iraq.

Earlier, in a terse resignation letter, lacking many of the traditional courtesies, Ms Short had accused Mr Blair of failing to honour his promise that the UN would take the lead in reconstructing post-war Iraq.

Ms Short wrote: "The assurances you gave me about the need for a UN mandate to establish a legitimate Iraqi government have been breached."
