Texas Killer D's

Houston Chronicle

One -- Oklahoma's Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed a resolution Tuesday commending the Texas lawmakers who fled to Ardmore. A Republican-supported resolution that would have encouraged Oklahoma officials to assist Texas officials in returning the errant lawmakers to Texas failed.

Carter County Sheriff Harvey Burkhart also offered assistance to the group.

"I got a couple of angry e-mails accusing me of harboring wimpy Democrats," Burkhart said. "I just let them know we were there to assist them, and we're glad to have them here."

The political overtones of the historic walkout cropped up quickly Tuesday as Perry's party moved to take advantage of it. A GOP radio ad targeting three of the Democrats, including Patrick Rose of Dripping Springs, hit the airwaves.

"Stop what you are doing. The following is an important announcement," an announcer says on the ad, which goes on to report that Rose "failed to execute his responsibilities on legislative business" and "has taken flight."

"Texas state troopers have been ordered to find Representative Rose and arrest him," the ad says, asking listeners to call the Department of Public Safety if they have information on the lawmakers' whereabouts.

That, said Texas Democratic Chairwoman Molly Beth Malcolm, went a bit too far.

"By tying up phone lines or sending troopers off on red herrings, the Republican Party's political game could delay a trooper's arrival at an auto accident or allow some kidnapper to escape with a child," she said.
