High School Sexual Daisy Chains

RESEARCHERS MAP THE SEXUAL NETWORK OF AN ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL

First I will say this is not completely accurate - some high school students will lie. No! Imagine that. But it is believed fairly accurate as the number of partners and the number of sexual actives at this high school are only very slightly below other surveys. One indication of a lack of complete honesty is that no males admitted a sexual same sex contact and there was only one female to female pairing. But the image is interesting and even useful. Unlike for adults you can't target the highly sexual active to stop the spread of STD's - there aren't that many in high school and for the next partner actives generally avoid partner's ex's and other close connections. To slow the spread of STD's you must break chains with sexual information that targets everyone.

The results showed that, unlike many adult networks, there was no core group of very sexually active people at the high school. There were not many students who had many partners and who provided links to the rest of the community.

Instead, the romantic and sexual network at the school created long chains of connections that spread out through the community, with few places where students directly shared the same partners with each other. But they were indirectly linked, partner to partner to partner. One component of the network linked 288 students – more than half of those who were romantically active at the school – in one long chain.
