Texas GOP Economy - Increasing Food Stamps, Food Charities
Texas sees a 75 percent increase in the number of Texans on food stamps since 2000.
Yolanda Gutierrez, at the Catholic Charities food pantry, has also seen a rising demand for food. In 2000, she said, 24,534 people visited the food pantry. In 2004, the number had risen to 49,687.
Many of the people who visit her pantry don't qualify for food stamps because they are recent immigrants, she said. And some who do qualify don't want to apply because of the red tape.
