NDOL: Idea of the Week: Home Rule for New Jersey

Like the New Democrats I have no strong view one way or another on rather NJ can change nominated candidates after the primary. Torricelli also had the option of resigning and a new Senator would had taken his place.

But I think it is hypocrisy for Republicans to ask the Supreme Court to overturn this.

It was a 7-0 decision by predominately Republican judges. It followed several New Jersey precedents. Just a couple years ago Republicans also replaced a candidate and even changed a primary date when one of their candidates ran into trouble.

As the Philadelpha Inquirer observes the voters will decide, as they should, and this may create a backlash as it did for the Republicans two years ago.
