Spanish Socialists: "Bush Should Lose" / US GOP: "Spain Appeases Terrorists"
RELATIONS between Washington and Madrid descended into acrimony yesterday after US Republicans accused Spanish voters of appeasement and Spain's prime minister-elect said he wanted George W. Bush to lose the American election.
The transatlantic war of words was triggered after Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose anti-war Socialist Party won a shock general election victory in the wake of the Madrid train bombings, described the US occupation of Iraq as a "fiasco" and pledged to pull Spain's 1300 troops out of Iraq by the end of June.
In response, a string of senior Republicans attacked not just Mr Zapatero, but the Spanish electorate itself, echoing the vitriol poured on France last year when it opposed the US-led invasion of Iraq.
el - why has the GOP become just haters, just a bunch of angry white men?
