Bush's credibility being tested

Bush advisers think it is a test he will pass easily. At a Republican National Committee meeting Friday in New York, they dismissed questions about the president's honesty as partisan politics and predicted the American people will see through it.

But Democrats sense a new weakness and are rushing to exploit it. The party is running ads casting doubts about Bush's truthfulness and Democratic presidential candidates are accusing Bush of a "credibility gap" that they hope could undermine him on other issues as well.

There is new evidence that the president indeed has lost a step. Four out of 10 Americans think he deliberately misled them about the need for war, according to a new poll for CNN and Time. Potentially more troubling for the White House, a majority of Americans now say they have doubts about his administration's truthfulness.
