Bettencourt [Republican tax assessor-collector in Harris County], says the discord is not limited to the Houston area, which Jillson labels "the homeland of Texas Republicanism for 50 years."
At the GOP state convention in June, where delegates narrowly approved the idea to study the tax and revisit it later, Bettencourt noted delegates representing at least three Dallas-area senate districts "voted overwhelming to nuke it."
"For the party to have that significant discussion in a gubernatorial year is important because it means there's a substantial amount of dissatisfaction, and not just in Houston," Bettencourt says. "Clearly it's a problem for a grass roots party that believes themselves to be anti tax."
