Can we all paper over our differences?

BagnewsNotes on how even toilet paper commercials urge compromise while dramatizing the fighter vs. lover difference.

One thing the commercial gets wrong is that Republicans will not compromise and high five each other as illustrated by the stimulus bill. As Kevin Drum comments on party line votes Senate Republicans refused to compromise with Democrats on changing the distribution of the tax breaks slightly, extending unemployment benefits a few weeks, and set up heating aid for the poor, along with a few goodies specifically designed to appeal to Republicans. "The moral of the story is this: Republicans have no intention of ever working with Democrats on anything remotely like a bipartisan basis. Even on something as trivial as this, they filibustered and won."

What Charmin got right was the racing for the sh*thouse metaphor.
