At a news conference in Delray Beach, Fla., after a speech to the Everglades Coalition environmental conference, Graham suggested President Bush's focus on Iraq has damaged America's war on terrorism, and that his focus on tax cuts has endangered Social Security and Medicare. Graham, the chairman of the Senate's caucus of centrist Democrats, said his twin passions of education and the environment would also be part of his message, but mostly he sounded like the Be-Very-Afraid candidate.
"The American people are at greater risk today than they were the day before September 11," he said. Graham, the ranking Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, cited intelligence estimates of a 75 percent chance of a terrorist attack should Saddam Hussein find himself on the verge of losing power. "I think it's outrageous that virtually nothing has been done to reduce our vulnerabilities," Graham said.
