Amy Writes About Texas

What is happening/has happened to the live & let live Texas I know?

I think it is a big enough state for everyone, isn't it? Isn't that what we pride ourselves on? Not only the physical largeness of our great state, but the largeness of our hearts and minds as well? In my varied travels around the country, I found that you meet Texans everywhere you go, and I am sure that is true throughout the rest of the world too. Texans have always had a huge curiosity and openmindedness about the world around them. Of course, they always come home to what they consider to be the best place in the world, Texas.

During the great depression, Texas didn't suffer as much as many other states because a bunch of our good 'ol boys got together at the Rice Hotel in down town Houston, and decided to cover from their own coffers the runs on the banks here so everything wouldn't collapse. During the civil rights movement in the 1960's, while other southern states were in chaos, Texas decided to keep a lid on everything and integrate. Texas has one of the largest thriving gay populations in the country outside of New York & San Francisco. We have a history of live & let live. It hasn't always been sweetness & light, but by & large in Texas we have always had a live & let live philosophy. During these and many other past times of trouble in our country, Texans have behaved simply, sensibly and taken care of their own. I hope this does not signal an end to the Great state of Texas.
