If GOP candidates are too closely aligned with the religious right, as Smith was, look for Democrats to have an opening. The overall tendency in the district seems to be "Vote Republican unless given a reason not to." Smith gave them a reason not to. Orlando Sanchez gave them a reason not to. In both cases, the Democratic candidate (or 'relatively' Democratic candidate) won.That still leaves a tough task of defining ones self as the type of Democrat that voters in this district are willing to support, and that's the task at hand for Jim Dougherty.

One small step for Democrats to make in impacting this race is to donate to the Dougherty campaign. Be sure to add the .36 just so they know it came from TexasTuesdays.
