Part of the reason the media ignored this story might have been it seems to have developed late in the campaign and they may have thought Democrats were attempting a partisan smear. To me, it seems pretty clear that there was a concentrated scrubbing effort to clean up the more easily found records on Bush from 1968 to 1976 - the drugs, the drinking, and the desertion.
