U.S. TV News increasing spots by PR firms and government agencies

A new study reveals the growing use by TV news broadcasts of segments produced by PR firms for clients. This is not revealed in the broadcast. Falling into this category are video news releases from U.S. government departments.

An example would be a video produced for the State Department of an Iraqi-American saying "Thank you Bush. Thank you USA." This ran on the news without revealing this was a PR video by the State Department. Another would be of a Halloween tips segment that included numerous shots of Snickers, M&M's and flowers. The corporate owners of 1-800-Flowers and the candies featured funded this undisclosed advertisement.
