A take down of Ann Coulter and the Republican owned The New Republic. Recently, a Republican I was having a debate with tried to support her arguments by refering to the "liberal" TNR. TNR's owners are Republican and so are its policies. It is the increasingly irrelevent Eastern elite Republicanism, the liberal Republicans of 20 years ago, but Republican. As I told her, TNR hasn't been considered a liberal voice for a few years.
Lance also had an excellent essay on what is wrong with Joe Lieberman too. It started about 8 years ago, not over Iraq.
Digby also gets it about Ann.

Actually TNR used to be considered quite liberal (especially when compared to National Review) and much more moderate than the Nation. They always seem hawkish about foreign policy (and endorsed Gore for prez), but on domestic policies they went all over the spectrum.
I subscribed to TNR for several years in the 1980s and 1990s, then cancelled when I discovered the American Prospect. American Prospect is an unabashed liberal journal, and their online presence is considerable today (far overshadowing TNR).
In the late 1980s I thought TNR was exciting and cutting edge. What this indicates about your friend is that she hasn't updated her opinion in a long time.
Yes, it used to be the liberal magazine even if stronly pro-Israel and hawkish. During the Clinton years it started changing and then had a change in ownership. A review of the 2000 election funding revealed they were strong Bush supporters. It has gotten steadily worse and is losing circulation rapidly. One of the latest columns is a strong defense of Ann Coulter.
