"Jack Edwards is taking over everything,'' Kerry said, joking that the boy would be the new campaign manager, as he and Edwards made their first joint appearances. Star of the Democratic Ticket

The often-aloof Kerry seemed energized by the presence of Edwards, his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children. The Edwards family stood arm-and-arm with the two grown Kerry daughters and Heinz's two sons - who took turns holding the youngsters at rallies.

Four-year-old Jack and 6-year-old Emma Claire aren't quite John-John and Caroline Kennedy yet, but they brought an instant aura of youth and family to the ho-hum campaign.

Kerry told the story of Jack Edwards being more interested in talking about his swimming skills than his father's new campaign role. "He knows what's important,'' Kerry said.

"It appeared to me that Sen. Kerry and Sen. Edwards were enjoying their children all interacting together - 4-year-olds provide a lot of entertainment,'' he said.
