The Texas Gubernatorial Debate

In a short debate, little new was learned but it stayed interesting.

One intelligent debate watcher did switch from Strayhorn to Bell. Keep reading.

Democrats say that Bell easily won after throwing Nerf balls at the TV screen.

Musings was at the same party and agreed that Kinky helped Bell, did little for himself.

An Austin Democrat says the same, Bell and Perry were the best and Perry has his record to sink him.

Another undecided now leans to Bell.

Texas debate as a round of Jeopardy reveals Strayhorn the loser.

ABC - implies Strayhorn the real loser.

With Perry insisting on one short debate at the least watched time, the citizens of Texas are among the losers on this debate. A PBS station should stage another debate and let Perry skip it if he wants. Bell could easily win this with a few more debates.

Viewers with access to the Internet favored Kinky and Bell as big winners, Perry and Strayhorn losers. "I want to crack down on employers," said Democrat Chris Bell. "If they wouldn't hire them, we wouldn't be having this debate [on immigration]."

Another vote earned for Bell.

A disorganized Independent rant singled out the biased moderator and journalists as the losers.

Blue Star State blog is inaccessible now but I pulled this from Technorati:
This debate tonight was a debacle for all those participating except Chris Bell. He did the exact opposite. As the moderator said "He nailed it." Bell answered all questions smoothly, even the one line questions that none of the other's could answer correctly. He correctly named 1836 as the year the Alamo fell and knew that Texas has no term limits for the governor. Strayhorn didn't even know the name of the new president of Mexico, and Perry didn't know the interest rate nor the electricity cost for the Governor's Mansion. The choice is clear: the best candidates for young people are the Democrats.
Brains and Eggs: Bell beat'em like a pinata

We have videos, and did Kinky lose another vote?.

Someone liked Grandma in the debate.

Bell First and Kinky second, but close.

Bell captured another fence-sitter.

I am using Technorati and Google blog searches to try to get away from all the progressive blogs I know and get a variety of opinions. I am getting Independents but the Republicans aren't coming up. I have a feeling they all skipped it or feel that Perry and Strayhorn and Kinky, a different kind or Republican, lost. Or just maybe the GOP conservatives go to bed too early.

Lots more I haven't posted, some in Live Journals marked private but Technorati snoops into. The consensus is everyone hates Perry, Strayhorn didn't win any votes she didn't already have, Bell is smart but a snoozefest, Kinky has good points but....

Here is an online video of the complete debate for those who want to form their own opinion.

If the purpose of a debate is to solidify your base and convert new voters, Bell won hands down. Perry was smart to try to keep the debate away from viewers. A few conversions to Chris Bell, I saw no conversions to Kinky and Strayhorn but a few "Gawd help Texas, is this all the choices" comments. Technically no, but I am not pushing the Libertarian in this important decision.

If people are paying attention, Bell should go up, Strayhorn way down, Kinky down a bit.

Update: Bell performance may get a million in contributions.

MSM Roundup.

Next time have professionals run the debate.

Holy cow... a debate? When? Where? Was it even on TV in Houston?

I'm someone very interested in Texas politics....and I missed this debate.

I watched three hours of PBS TV yesterday...not a word of any debate.

You know what would be good: an online transcript of the debate!

I see I neglected to post this early Friday evening start time. You might catch a CSPAN repeat or if you have broadband there is a link above.

Oh well, I also didn't post the swearing in of Stanley in Pasadena, I think. Just in time for the Harrison - Stanley race to start again after $100,000 in court costs on just one side.

The Kinky site just took a comment on the debate I made, erased it, and signed my name to someone else's comment. Incompetence or typical practice of non-fawning comments?

Here is my comment:

Strayhorn - big loser, looked incompetent.

Perry - plastic hair, plastic smile, misleads about toll roads and his secret deal with Spanish developer.

Chris Bell - dull but knowledgeable, if you want a Democrat or a change.

Kinky - nervous, for if you want a really big change. I am nor sure people waiting to make up their minds were persuaded.

Strayhorn lost votes. Perry may have stayed the same as he kept his viewers away by scheduling the debate when he did. Bell picked up votes, Kinky kept his voters but may not have added any.

Channel 11 may repeat the debate tape.

The above comment was a pleasant surprise.

The Perry campaign blog, from what I could see without signing up for it, was typical "we make our own reality" BS. I was willing to sign up for Kinky's but to add my email to a Perry list - no thank you.

My conclusion, and the concensus of great majority of my blog searches, was that Strayhorn was the big loser. Then I go over to my parents who watched the debate and my Republican stepmother is still for Strayhorn and my Dad seems undecided between her and Chris Bell.
