U.S. Income Gap More Like a Chasm

Steve Lopez of the Los Angeles Times looks at un-unionized service jobs.

What does 18 years of full-time employment as a security guard get?

For several years I worked as a security guard. It was a solution to insomnia and working somewhere where I thought I could also work on writing and game design. Any upward advancement is to still low-paying supervisory or management jobs. Higher paying management involves connections to companies or smoozing of employers that can hire. There is no affordable health insurance and no benefits and you have to pay work costs like uniforms out of your pay. Blacks stuck on the bottom rung of the ladder for years are a significant part of the workforce.
