Why Tom Tomorrow is Terrific and Oklahoma sucks

Robert Nagle went back a few years and found where a Tom Tomorrow cartoon caused an uproar in Oklahoma leading to the cartoon being dropped by a paper and a law firm associated with the paper losing school contracts.

The Religious Right in Oklahoma is large, militant, and organized. They have driven small business owners to bankruptcy and even criminal convictions in the case of comic book stores and video rental chains. Libraries and universities have often been attacked and censored. These actions often occur under the guise of protecting people from child pornography. The most famous case was confiscating the Academy Award winning film The Tin Drum. Of course, some victims had their day in court and Oklahoma taxpayers had to fork over a million dollars. (More on law and disorder in Oklahoma.)

One member of the religious Mafia in Oklahoma - Mary Fowler was interviewed by Rose Aquilar. And then Mary Fowler responds in comments but it degenerates from there. Digby calls Mary Fowler an example of DeLay's dupes and suggest that the Republican party could lose religious support if more of the GOP immoral wrong-doing is exposed.

Recently groups like the Inter-Faith Alliance have gotten stronger in Oklahoma and actively oppose the radical religious right from a Christian perspective.

There is a lot of good material here on the war being waged for the soul of America. Also here on moving from talk to action and at an atheist/agnostic site keeping up on Christian Right news. Oklahoma is only the tip of the tumor.
